Canadian home builder's Net Zero Energy Homes project in Calgary community
CALGARY, March 29, 2016 /CNW/ - Mattamy Homes, North America's largest privately owned homebuilder, was announced as a finalist for the 25th annual Emerald Awards, presented by the Alberta Emerald Foundation (AEF). Mattamy Homes was one of three finalists named in the Large Business category (100 employees or more) for their recent ecoII Net Zero Energy Homes Community project in Calgary's own Cityscape community.
Each year, the Emerald Awards recognize outstanding environmental achievement in sustainable development within Alberta. Following the initial nomination process, knowledgeable third-party judges with cross-sectoral experience are enlisted by AEF to select the top three nominees in each of the 10 Emerald Award categories as finalists. Award recipients are then announced at the awards ceremony, which will take place this year on June 8.
"At Mattamy Homes, our ongoing commitment to sustainable development is a top priority," said Don Barrineau, Calgary Division President, Mattamy Homes. "Our Net Zero Energy Homes initiative is just one example of how innovation and environmental excellence continue to remain top of mind as we develop communities throughout Alberta. We are delighted to have been nominated and now recognized as a finalist for the Emerald Awards, and we are proud to be playing a role in creating a sustainable future for our province and the world."
Uniquely Albertan, the Emerald Awards are the only award of their kind in Canada, showcasing environmental excellence across all sectors, including large and small businesses, individuals, not-for-profit associations, community groups, youth and governments. These awards are also sponsored and endorsed by key industry partners, such as The City of Calgary, The City of Edmonton and the Alberta Real Estate Foundation.
Mattamy Homes' significant ongoing commitment to the environment, social responsibility, and going and beyond normal development practices and statutory duties, was most recently demonstrated by its participation in the ecoII Net Zero Energy Homes Community project. A national initiative, which will almost double the number of NZE homes in Canada, the project challenged select Canadian homebuilders to develop energy efficient residences that could generate as much energy as they consumed on an annual basis.
